2-4-8 Drill
In this video, I go over the 2-4-8 drill along with hand placement during a run(applies to everyday work too) with a 3yo gelding named Rip! A couple things to note:
You can see me constantly lifting Rip off the barrel because he is so turny. But notice when I lift him off I make sure he actually gets off my hand and immediately after I ask, then release. I sometimes immediately go back in to asking him to lift off again. The key is to release when they give it to you BIG, then release BIG. Make the “give” and “release” very different(black and white). We want to stay away from blurred lines and gray area. When you ask, mean it! That doesn’t mean be rude and harsh, but ask and keep adding pressure until the give BIG.
I said he was soft and bendy but can be stiff in ways. What I mean is that so far the work I’ve done has made him really soft and bendy, vs. when we started he was dull and stiff in his body. The stiffness I continued to feel while I had him slowly got less which shows me he was still just a little green!
